Uniscribe
For having the Tibetan characters shown properly you need to install a version of USP10.dll that supports Tibetan. The file USP10.dll is in c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\. It is the Uniscribe engine for Windows, in the following simply called Uniscribe.
Tibetan support is given from version 1.471.4030.0 upwards.
Checking the Uniscribe Version
In a first step you should check which version of Uniscribe is on your computer. If you need information how to do this, please read the description on thdl.org.
Getting a new Version of Uniscribe
A version of USP10.dll with Tibetan support is for example contained in Google Earth. So, if you download and install Google Earth, you will find it in the Google Program Folder.
However, the installation will not overwrite the original Uniscribe version in c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\.
Neither you can't copy it into this folder while Windows is running, because the system protection of Windows will restore the original version.
Copying the Uniscribe File
There are several ways to get around this:
If there is a second operation system on your computer, you may copy the file from there.
You can use the command line. For a detailed description please see below.
On thdl.org is a description of using the Windows Recovery Console for copying Uniscribe.
How to copy Uniscribe from the Command Line
- Important: before changing the USP10.dll please make a copy of the original file. So you can restore it if the new file does not work well.
- Put a copy of the new Uniscribe file in c:\WINDOWS\.
- Insert the boot disk and restart your computer.
- Follow the instructions until the prompt (C:\>) appears.
- Then type into the command line:
